YOUTH SCIENCE CENTER 2010 FIELD TRIPS

 

 

# 1: Raymond M Alf Museum Tour

Tuesday, August 3, 10:00 am to 11:30 am

Grades 1 and up.  $4 per person.

The Raymond Alf Museum has a great display of dinosaur skeletons and skulls, plus fossils from all over the world.  Students of the Webb School, where the museum is located, dug many of the specimens.  On this guided tour you will see all of these exhibits plus stuffed animals, track ways, and rock and mineral specimens in the Hall of Life and Hall of Footprints.

Location: The Alf museum is located at 1175 W. Baseline Road in Claremont, between Garey and Towne Avenues.  The entrance guard will direct you to parking.

 

 

# 2:  Braille Institute Tour

Thursday, August 5, 10:00 am to 11:00 am

All ages.  Limit 25 persons.  Members – FREE.  Nonmembers - $5 per family.

The visit will begin with a video for children about blindness and its causes.  We will see many of the aids blind people use to get around.  We will meet with a blind person and hear about her experience about becoming blind and how she gets around and does her daily activities.   Each visitor will receive a Braille alphabet card. 

Location:  521 North Dale Avenue in Anaheim at the corner of Dale and Crescent.  From Heights, take Hacienda Blvd south, then Whittier Blvd west and Beach Blvd south.  Continue past the 91 Freeway and turn left at Crescent.  Parking is limited.  You may use the Church lot across the street on the north side for parking.

 

 

# 3: BUS TRIP to Northrop Grumman Fighter Production Facility – El Segundo

Friday, August 6, 8:00 am to 2:00 pm

BRING YOUR LUNCH. We will stop at a local park for lunch before returning.

Grades 3 and up.  Limit 50 persons.  $5 per person.

Registrations should be received by July 20.

Persons 18 years and older must give their company affiliation,

 and either social security or date of birth.  NO EXCEPTIONS.

                      Participants must be USA citizens.

This tour consists of an educational brief on Northrop Grumman, NG Products, and the History of Flight.  We will also tour the Test Lab and Cyber Warfare Integration Network Lab.  We will see static aircraft displays of the YF-23 and F-5. Tour the El Segundo Manufacturing Center and see the F/A-18 Super Hornet fuselage assembly process.  The F/A-18 is the US Navy front line carrier strike fighter. 

Location:  We will meet at Wedgeworth School at 8 AM to board the bus.  

Cameras, flash drives and cell phones with digital capabilities are PROHIBITED.

YOU WILL NEED TO LEAVE THEM ON THE BUS IF YOU TAKE THEM ALONG. 

Please wear your name badge in plain view above the waist.  Return all badges to the Sponsor before departing Northrop.

 

# 4: Page Museum / La Brea Tar Pits

            Saturday, August 7, 10:00 am to Noon

            All Ages.   $10 per family.  Space is limited and you must preregister.

An exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Page Museum to see paleontologists at work in the dig pit and inside the fossil recovery and preparation lab.   Learn how animals were trapped in the tar pits.  We will also visit the large underground fossil storage area.

Location:  The museum is located at 5801 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles.  Park in the pay lot on the north side of the building off Curson Avenue.  Meet at the employee’s entrance on the northeast side of the museum.  DO NOT GO TO THE MAIN ENTRANCE!!! This tour includes free admission to the Page Museum exhibit area after the tour. 

 

 

# 5:  Omni Metalcraft Corporation Plant Tour

  Tuesday, August 10, 10:30 am to 11:15 am

  Ages 8 and up.  Limit 20 persons.  $5 per family

Omni manufactures a wide variety of metal conveying and handling systems at their Downey plant starting from round and flat metal stock.  See www.omni.com for a description of their facility. 

Location:  9300 Hall Road in Downey.

                      

 

# 6: South Coast Air Quality Management District Tour.

Wednesday,  August 11,  10:00 to 11:30 am. 

Ages 7 and up.  Limit 25 persons.  $5 per family.

A visit to the offices of the Air Quality Management District in Diamond Bar.  The tour will start with a media presentation of the AQMD, followed by a visit to the alternative energy fueling stations for vehicles, and a tour of the laboratory and a demonstration of air pollution. 

Location: 21865 E. Copley Drive in Diamond Bar.  Enter Copley from Golden Springs Drive, between Grand Avenue and Brea Canyon Road.

 

 

# 7:  Baxco Pharmaceutical Tour

  Thursday, August 12, 10:00 to 11:00 am

  Ages 7 and up.   Limit 20.  $5 per family

Baxco packages vitamins and nutritional products at their facility in Walnut.    There are soft gels, tablets and capsules packaged and labeled at this facility.  We will see the unscrambler, dessicant inserter, counter, capper and labeler for fish oil capsules. NOTE:  This is NOT the same as Lemon Drive!

 

 

 # 8:  Vegetable Growing Workshop

   Saturday, August 14, 10:00 to 11:00 am

   All ages.   Limit 25 persons.  $5 per family.

An instructor from GroOrganic will show families how to grow vegetables organically.  We will learn about composting, enriching the soil and what to plant.  There will be handouts, seeds and seedlings.  

 

 

Location:  YSC at Wedgeworth School, 16949 Wedgeworth Drive, Hacienda Heights.
# 9:  Grand Central Recycling Center

   Monday, August 16,  10:00 to 10:45 am

   Ages 5 and up.   Members - FREE.  Non-members - $5 per family. 

We will visit the Valley Vista Services Recycling Center in the City of Industry.  See how your household trash is sorted out for recyclables in this large facility. 

Location: 999 Hatcher Avenue in the City of Industry.  

Park in the lot and walk to the office entrance.

 

 

# 10: State Air Resource Board Test Lab

   Tuesday, August 17, 10:00 to 11:00 am

   Ages 8 and up.  Limit 20.  Members – FREE.  Non-members - $5 per family.

The Haagen-Smit Laboratory does automobile engine testing.   We will see cars being tested and learn about vehicles and air pollution.  The lab is named after Dr. A.J. Haagen-Smit, the CalTech scientist who discovered the link between automobile exhaust compounds and smog.  Location: 9528 Telstar Avenue in El Monte.   

 

 

# 11: Los Angeles County Sanitation District Tour

   Wednesday, August 18, 10:00 am to 11:30 am

   Ages 7 and up. Members – FREE.  Non-members $3 per family.

Tour participants will visit the San Jose Creek 5ater Reclamation Plant, a state-of- the-art wastewater sewage treatment plants.   You will see the sights, sounds, and smells involved in this important process. In addition, you'll discuss the water cycle, water conservation, and how our actions impact the water environment.

Location: 1955 Workman Mill Road in North Whittier, just north of the 60 Freeway and east of the 605.  From Hacienda Heights, take the 60 Freeway and take the Crossroads Parkway (Fry’s) exit.  Turn right on to Crossroads Parkway and continue as it curves around to where it ends at Workman Mill Road.   Go to the main lobby and wait for the tour guide. 

 

 

# 12:  Jet Propulsion Lab Field Trip

     Friday, August 20,  12:45 pm to 3:00 pm

   Limit 75 persons. $5 per person. REGISTRATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY JULY 20.

JPL will give the YSC a private tour of the NASA Spaceflight Research and Development Center.  The visit will begin with a 20-minute film introduction to space exploration.  In the museum we will see models of the Voyager spacecraft, Mars Pathfinder Rover, and learn about plans for future space flight.  We will also see Mission Control and the spacecraft assembly area.  

When registering you must give the full names of all adults and children attending. Persons over 18 MUST GIVE THEIR COUNTRY OF CITIZENSHIP OR RESIDENCE.  NO EXCEPTIONS! 

Location: From Hacienda Heights, take the 60 west, then the 605 north, and the 210 west. Continue through Pasadena and take the 210 northbound. Exit on Berkshire Ave/Oak Grove exit and go right. Turn left on Oak Grove Drive and continue 0.8 miles to JPL. Park in the lot, walk across the street, and meet in front of the main entrance. Allow 45 minutes driving time from Hacienda Heights.

 

 

# 13: San Bernardino Mountain Search and Rescue Facility at Rialto Airport

   Saturday, August 21, 10:00 to 11:00 am

   All ages.   $3 per family.

We will see the Sheriff’s rescue helicopters and learn about the equipment used and how they rescue people in the mountains.

               Location:  Rialto Airport, 1776 Miro Way, Rialto 92376. 

 

 

#14:  Columbia Memorial Space Center in Downey

  Saturday, August 28, 10:00 am to Noon

   Ages 5 and up.  $3 registration fee per family plus

   $3 per person admission fee at the Center

   Location: 12400 Clark Avenue, Downey 90242

    A visit to the new Space Center in Downey.  The 20,000 square foot Center opened in 2009 and is filled with many hands-on  space and engineering displays, including an interactive  piloting exhibit, shuttle docking exhibit and for those 7 years old and up, the Lego robotics “Mission to Mars.”  The exhibits were designed by Gyroscope, Inc.  Also on display are artifacts from the space program. The $3 per person admission fee is paid at the Center. ( Send the $3 registration fee only to the YSC.)  At the ticket office you must say you are with the Youth Sciience Center field trip in order to get this special group rate.
