>> YSC Field Trip Registration Form #1: Braille Institute Tour The visit will begin with a video for children about blindness and its causes. We will see many of the aids blind people use to get around. Each visitor will receive a Braille alphabet card. The center is located at 521 North Dale Avenue in Anaheim at the corner of Dale and Crescent. No fees. All ages. Limit 25. From Hacienda Heights, take Hacienda Blvd south, then Whittier Blvd west and Beach Blvd south. Continue past the 91 Freeway and turn left at Crescent. Members, free; nonmembers, $3 per family. #2: Grand Central Transfer Recycling Facility See where your household trash goes and how it is sorted and prepared for recycling. This site also accepts electronic waste materials for free from customers of Valley Vista. The transfer station is operated by Valley Vista Services. Location: Meet at the Valley Vista business office, 17445 East Railroad Street in the City of Industry. The office is located east of Azusa Avenue on Railroad. Limit 25. All ages. No fees. #3: Sanitation District Tour Tour participants will visit the San Jose Creek Water Reclamation Plant, a state-of-the-art wastewater (or sewage) treatment facility. You will learn how your wastewater is cleaned and reused. Experience the sights, sounds, and smells involved in this important process. In addition, you'll discuss the water cycle, water conservation, and how our actions impact the water environment. Open to ages 7 and up. The plant is located at 1955 Workman Mill Road in North Whittier, just north of the 60 Freeway and east of the 605. From Hacienda Heights, take the 60 Freeway and take the Crossroads Parkway (Fry’s) exit. Turn right on to Crossroads Parkway and continue as it curves around to where it ends at Workman Mill Road. The plant will be directly in front. Go to the main lobby and wait for the tour guide. Members, free; nonmembers $3 per family. #4: Griffith Observatory Bus Trip. We will travel as a group by charter bus to the parking area at the Los Angeles Zoo. From there we will board a shuttle bus for the trip to the Griffith Observatory. Meet at Wedgeworth Elementary School at 10:45 am. The YSC’s Judy Dominguez will be our tour guide. The newly remodeled Griffith Observatory is truly spectacular! There are exhibits about the solar system and planets which are not seen anywhere else. Trip fee is $10 for adults and $5 for students age 5 to 12 and $5 for seniors 60 and over. Registratons must be received by July 31. Limit 50. This does not include admission to the Samuel Oschin Planetarium, which must be purchased upon arrival. Tickets to the Oschin shows are $7 adults, $5 seniors 60 and over and $3 for children 5 to 12. Limit 50 Persons. #5: City of Industry Fire Station 118 Tour A visit to Station 118 in the City of Industry. See the crew quarters, kitchen, living area and learn about the fire fighting equipment used on the trucks. All ages. Limit 25. The station is located at 17056 Gale Avenue, just west of Wal-Mart. No fees. #6: Raymond M Alf Museum Tour The Raymond Alf Museum has a great display of dinosaur skeletons and skulls, plus fossils from all over the world. Many of the specimens were dug by students of the Webb School, where the museum is located. On this guided tour you will see all of these exhibits plus stuffed animals and trackways, and rock and mineral specimens in the Hall of Life and Hall of Footprints. Grades 1 and up. Tour fee: $3 per person. The Alf museum is located at 1175 W. Baseline Road in Claremont, between Garey and Towne Avenues. The entrance guard will direct you to parking. #7: Jet Propulsion Lab Field Trip JPL will give the YSC a private tour of the NASA spaceflight research and development center. The visit will begin with a 20-minute film introduction to space exploration. In the museum we will see models of the Voyager space craft, Mars Pathfinder Rover, and learn about plans for future space flight. We will also see Mission Control and the spacecraft assembly area. Limit 40 persons. Registration fee: $3 per family. When registering you must give the full names of all adults and children attending. Persons over 18 MUST GIVE THEIR COUNTRY OF CITIZENSHIP OR RESIDENCE when signing up for this field trip. NO EXCEPTIONS! From Hacienda Heights, take the 60 west, then the 605 north, and the 210 west. Continue through Pasadena and take the 210 northbound. Exit on Berkshire Ave/Oak Grove exit and go right. Turn left on Oak Grove Drive and continue 0.8 miles to JPL. Park in the lot and walk across the street and meet in front of the main entrance. Allow 45 minutes driving time from Hacienda Heights REGISTRATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY JULY 12. Limit 40 persons. #8; South Coast Air Quality Management District Tour. A visit to the offices of the Air Quality Management District in Diamond Bar. The tour will start with a media presentation of the AQMD, followed by a visit to the alternative energy fueling station and vehicles, and a tour of the laboratory. Ages 7 and up. Limit 25 persons. No fees. The AQMD is located at 21865 E. Copley Drive in Diamond Bar. Enter Copley from Golden Springs Drive, between Grand Avenue and Brea Canyon Road. #9: Los Angeles Natural History Museum A behind-the-scenes look at the vertebrate paleontology lab. See how scientists prepare specimens for display. This tour includes admission to the museum area including the Butterfly Pavillion and Thomas the T. Rex Lab. You may also have time to visit the nearby California Science Center (free admission). Limit 20 persons, age 7 and up. Tour fee: $5 per family. Meet at the employee entrance on the north side of the museum to the left of the stairway by the lily pond. The Natural History Museum is located at 900 Exposition Boulevard. across from USC between Figueroa and Vermont. Parking is available in the patrolled lots off Menlo Avenue just west of the museum. The California Science Center lot is entered from 39th street from Figueroa. ($6 parking). #10: Nutrilite Plant Tour Nutrilite’s manufacturing facility covers 22 acres with 300,000 square feet of building space. The plant produces plant concentrates, supplemental tablets and food bars. We will begin the tour with a 22-minute video before visiting the manufacturing area. The plant is located at 5600 Beach Blvd on the east side of the street. The building sign reads, “Nutrilite LIfe Center for Optimal Health.” Ages 12 and up. Limit 25. See the composing, paste-up, plate-making and pressrooms. Ages 8 and up. Limit 15 persons, 5 person minimum.. 625 N. Grand Avenue in Santa Ana. Exit the 5 Freeway south on Grand Avenue. The plant is just north of the 55 Freeway. No fees. #13: Fullerton Airport Tour We will learn how an airport operates, get a close-up look at a civilian airplane to see how it flies, and see many different types of propeller airplanes taking off and landing. See what it's like to sit inside a small airplane. We will also visit the Orange County Fire Authority water-dropping helicopter. Ages 5 and up. Limit 25 children. No fees. From Hacienda Heights, take Hacienda Blvd south, then Whittier Blvd west and Beach Blvd south. The airport address is 5801 West Commonwealth in Fullerton. Members, free; nonmembers $3 per family. #14: Page Museum/La Brea Tar Pits An exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Page Museum to see the paleontologists at work and inside the fossil recovery lab. Learn how they became trapped in the tar pits. We will also visit the large underground fossil storage area.. This tour also includes free entrance to see the museum exhibits. Space is limited and you must preregister. From Hacienda Heights, take the 60 west, then follow the 10 West to the La Brea Avenue Exit. Head north on La Brea Avenue to Wilshire Boulevard. Turn left on Wilshire Boulevard. Drive 10 blocks to Curson Avenue. Turn right on Curson Avenue. Our parking lot will be on the left-hand side at the end of the block. Meet at the employee’s entrance on the northeast side of the museum at 5801 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles. Paid parking lot on the north side of the building. DO NOT GO TO THE MAIN ENTRANCE!
