International Year of Astronomy
|
|
The American Astronomical Society will have its 214th meeting at the Pasadena
Convention Center June 7-11. In celebration of the International Year of Astronomy,
the AAS is planning a free public bazaar and star party on Saturday, June 6 from 8 am to 11 pm.
The YSC will set up the digital Starlab with Judy Dominguez giving programs on what
you will see that night from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm.
Come and join us for this celebration of astronomy!

e-Waste Roundup May 23at Wedgeworth Elementary

Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 23. Wedgeworth School will have an electronic waste roundup from 9 am to 3 pm. Start saving your surplus or broken electronic equipment, including monitors, computers, laptops, batteries and small household appliances. Did you know that only 11% of computers get recycled? If they are dumped in landfills, the lead will leach in to our water supplies.
This is a fund raising event for Wedgeworth School and to help the community by keeping hazardous materials out of the landfills.
The school is located at 16949 Wedgeworth Drive in Hacienda Heights.
The YSC will also be open from 11 am to 3 pm in Room 8, so stop by for a visit!
The following items can be dropped off: Televisions, computers of any type, monitors, fax and photocopy machines, video recorders, DVD and CD players, printers, household batteries, cell phones and PDA's and electrical appliances (not including microwave ovens and fluorescent light bulbs).

Engineering Back In Fashion

April 24, 2009. MILWAUKEE - Jonathan Liegois once wanted to be a marine biologist. Instead, the college freshman is here at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, his dream of undersea discovery replaced by the more practical ideal of a steady job and good income.
"The job outlook is high," he says, echoing the sentiments of many classmates. "If you stick to it, it will pay off."
Across the United States, enrollment in engineering programs has risen to levels not seen in three decades. The recession appears to be one factor, as students and their parents look for dependable careers.
But some education officials detect a shift in opinion about the profession itself, as global warming and stem-cell research make fields like chemical and bioengineering more than just wise choices for job-seekers - but fashionable ones, too.
Many students are bringing to engineering a heightened sense of social responsibility and a desire "to go out and make a difference in the world," says Joseph Helble, dean of the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., where enrollment in introductory undergraduate courses is 30 percent above the five-year average.
Nationally, enrollment in undergraduate engineering programs rose 3 percent in 2007 and 4.5 percent 2008, according to the American Association of Engineering Education. Meanwhile, enrollment in masters' degree programs rose 7 percent in 2007 and 2 percent in 2008. In the fall of 2008, 91,489 masters degree students and 403,193 undergraduates were studying engineering at US universities and colleges.

YSC Day at Puente Hills Mall, Saturday May 9, 2009, 1 to 4 pm. Join us in the Center Court of Puente Hills Mall in the City of Industry. We will have a Lego robotics competion, live snakes and lizards, hissing cockroaches, crazy
chemistry with George "Dr. Flubber" Lightholder, a make-and-take water cycle bracelet and an astronomy activity. Don't miss out on the fun at this free event!
Cal Tech Science Saturdays. For ages 8 and up. Admission is $5 per person. Stunning high definition movies serve as the springboard for lively discussions about the science behind the beauty and wonder of nature and science. Join Caltech scientists as they help unravel the mysteries of our world. At Beckman Auditorium on the Caltech campus in Pasadena. Saturday, May 9, 2 pm. Earth: Power of the Planet - Volcano. Volcanoes are usually seen as destructive and frightening, but they are absolutely critical to making the Earth a home for life. Without them, Earth would have become a dead planet millions of years ago. A BBC/National Geographic Channel US/ZDF co-production.
Wedgeworth School Star Party. Friday, May 15, 7 to 9 pm. The YSC and Wedgeworth Elementary will have a Star Party on May 15. The digital Starlab planetarium will be set up for continuous programs in the multipurpose room. There will be telescopes set up to view the planets and stars, and hands-on activities for the kids in the
classroom. This is a free activity.
Los Altos High School 50th Anniversary Celebration. SATURDAY, May 16, Noon to 6 pm. The date of the 50th Celebration will be May 16th, from twelve to six pm. It will consist of a car show, performing arts performances, live bands, game booths, food vendors, silent auction and much more. 15325 E. Los Robles Ave in Hacienda Heights.

Wedgeworth School Hawaii Day, SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 2 to 6 pm. Fun, food and entertainment at this first-ever Hawaiian festival. Tickets are $5 each. The school's annual variety show follows at 6:30 pm.
Schabarum Park Family Bird Walk. See what kinds of birds are in our local park. Held the 3rd Sunday each month at 8:00 am. Meet at the park office. Free (Parking fee is charged, but you can park on Azusa Avenue and walk in). All ages welcome, children must be accompanied by an adult. The walks are led by naturalist Ray Jillson. The park is located at the corner of Azusa Avenue and Colima Road in Rowland Heights. Parking is free if you tell the guard that you are there for the bird walk.

Visiting the Hacienda Heights Youth Science Center
The Youth Science Center operates a hands-on science center in Hacienda Heights in Room 8 of Wedgeworth Elementary School. (Map) Since 1984, visitors have enjoyed our free-of-charge science center.
The Youth Science Center is open Tuesday and Friday from 12:00 P.M. to 3:45 P.M., and Saturday from 11:00 A.M to 2:00 P.M. During the Christmas break the Center will be closed December 20 through January 5. Visiting guests can also enjoy the Youth Science Center store, which is stocked with various science related materials. For more information regarding the Youth Science Center
