| | | | Letter from the President/CEO
| Dear Friends of the Youth Science Center,
Happy Holidays!
I would just like to thank you all for supporting our
5th Annual Gala! It was a great success, with new sponsors and donors. Again, we would not be here without the support of our friends. Be on the lookout for next years Gala! It'll be our 25th Anniversary, featuring special guest Fritz Coleman. Please contact us if you are interested in being a part of this successful event.
We have great plans for the New Year. We are continuing our 5th grade Water Education Program in January in partnership with the Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District and the Sanitation District of Los Angeles County called, "The Magical World of Water." We will also be working on new projects as they come, particularly expanding our Water Education Program to as many schools in the San Gabriel area/Los Angeles County. In the upcoming year, we will also begin meetings with the Facilities Committee for the future YSC facility. If you are interested in joining the Facilities Committee, please contact us.
I know that it has been a particularly tough year for all of us. Please do not forget the great non-profits out there doing good work. We need all the support we can get. Again, let's keep our hopes up for a great 2009! You can definitely look forward to great things from us next year and the years to come!!
Please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments or suggestions. Happy Holidays to you and yours!!
Faithfully, Ling-Ling Chang President & CEO

| The new digital Starlab is available for shows at your school.
Come and see the mysteries of space through the Starlab, the indoor planetarium of the Youth Science Center. It offers children the opportunity to study stars through a portable, inflatable planetarium. Now you don't have to wait until it gets dark at night to see the wonders of the sky. Our new digital projector will show the sun and the seasons, Greek constellations and how they move around the North Star, objects in the current night sky, and even a simulated fly by around the moon! The planetarium will accommodate a class of 35 students. It is 20 feet in diameter and 11 feet high. Narrated shows are 45-minutes in length, and must be done indoors. Digital Starlab programs are $110 each, 2 show minimum. Programs are for grade 2 through 6.
The YSC recently did Starlab programs for all first through fifth grade classes at West Whittier Elementary in the Whititer City School District.

YSC LAUNCHES WATER EDUCATION PROGRAM
| The YSC water education outreach program for public and private school 5th grade classes began in May. The first program was at Del Valle Elementary in La Puente. The class at Del Valle was covered by Time Warner Cable. To see the news clip, click here.
The program is underwritten by the Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District (a water wholesaler which supplies local water districts) and the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County. The free program consists of three 50-minute hands-on lessons followed by an optional field trip to the San Jose Creek Water Treatment Plant in North Whittier. Each students receives a 21-page student workbook to go along with the lessons. Eligible schools must be in the USGVWD service area. See map.

| Science Fair Projects: Water-Related Topics | Is your student looking for a science fair topic? Consider doing one on water! The Eastern Municipal Water District has put together an excellent guide on picking a project and how to do a successful project from start to finish. It is also a useful guide for any science fair project.
WHY WATER IS SPECIAL There are many reasons why you should pick a water-related topic for your science fair project. Water is all around us, and is easily available for observation and testing. Water is non-toxic, non-explosive and non-corrosive, in other words it is a safe substance to work with. Although we tend to take water for granted, it is actually a very unusual substance with unique and fascinating properties. The more you learn about water the more amazed you will be. For example, water is the only substance which occurs in all three states of matter (solid, liquid and gas) at naturally occurring temperatures. It is unique in that the solid form of water (ice) floats in the liquid form (water). Ice also takes up more room than the same amount of water in liquid form. Water is known as the universal solvent--given enough time, (which might be millions of years), everything will dissolve in water. The reason for this is the unique chemical structure of the water molecule. Water is involved in a huge variety of chemical, physical, and biological interactions because everything will dissolve within it, therefore making it essential to life. Although there are life forms that can live without air, there are none that can survive without water! Water makes the chemical interactions and exchanges needed by all living organisms possible. Two-thirds of our planet is covered in water. With its presence or its absence water shapes and determines every ecosystem and land form on Earth. For these reasons and many others, learning about water is useful for everyday life. Anything you learn about water has real and immediate applications. Water is like a doorway that can take you from the world of observation and experience deep into the heart of science.
The guide can be viewed or downloaded here.

Youth Science Center 16949 Wedgeworth Drive Hacienda Hts, CA 91745 | 48th Agriculture District
| The 48th Agriculture District office is located on the MSAC campus. It has a wide variety of teacher resources for agriculture-related topics. The materials are free, but teachers must agree to participate in the School's Agriculture and Nutrition Fair, held at the Pomona Fairplex in May.
The district has assembled teaching materials from diverse sources, and purchase or receive donations of books, hydroponics materials, bread kits, incubators and aquariums and chillers. Our resource center provides a one-stop shopping center for teachers - materials for about 60 projects in one place- so they can select a project that coordinates with what they are required to teach in their grades. | TIMSS Report for 2007 Science and Math Testing
| Math Gains Reported for U.S. Students By SAM DILLON Published: December 9, 2008 New York Times
American fourth- and eighth-grade students made solid achievement gains in math in recent years and in two states showed spectacular progress, an international survey of student achievement released on Tuesday found. Science performance was flat.
The results showed that several Asian countries continued to outperform the United States greatly in science and math, subjects that are crucial to economic competitiveness and research.
The survey, the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study, or Timss, found that fourth-grade students in Hong Kong and eighth-grade students in Taiwan were the world's top scorers in math, while Singapore dominated in science at both grade levels. "We were pleased to see improvements in math, and wished we'd seen more in science," said Stuart Kerachsky, acting commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics at the Education Department, which carried out an analysis of the performance of American students on the test.
The latest Timss study, the world's largest review of math and science achievement, involved testing a representative sample of students in each country in 2007, the first time the tests had been administered since 2003. The results included fourth-grade scores from 36 countries and eighth-grade scores from 48 countries. The tests cover subjects taught in all the participating countries, including algebra, chemistry, geometry and physics.
